The skies are clear and blue. It’s a pleasant 79 degrees with a light breeze. There is no clue that not too far from here people are experiencing life changing tragedy. Our hearts and prayers are with them.

Now this is kind of a strange story. About 100 yrads ago they put up a granite memorial to honor Abe Lincoln and the actual log cabin where he was born. They pieced the log cabin back together inside the granite building. Only to find out later that that had the right location, but the wrong cabin. Anyway, here is a picture of the memorial.

There were intersections where there were 2 or 3 waffle houses at an intersection. Unfortunately, the starbucks are few and far between.

There is a hike into the Smokey mountains. It is ‘paved’ the whole way. In some areas there are dangerous drops and that is posted. There is a 300 foot elevation gain over 1.25 miles. When you finally make your way there, its a small waterfall with a bridge and a small pond at the bottom. Oh, and probably half the population of tennessee is there with their kids wading in the pool and climbing the rocks.

We visited Tuckaleechee caverns. It was very cool (relatively speaking). The guide could have been better though.

On the Cherokee reservation you can drive in 5 miles and if you’re clever find the trailhead to mingo falls. From there you can hike under the canopy of trees up 150 knee eroding stairs to a short but rocky trail and feed the mosquitoes as you are surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of this huge cascading waterfall.

This, my friends, is the lowest temperature we’ve seen in weeks. Its a big relief from the high nineties we’ve seen lately.
